Klamath Falls is the county seat of Klamath County, Oregon. In 2013 its population was over 21,000. George Nurse founded Klamath Falls in 1867. Nurse called it Linkville after the Link River. About 1892 officials changed the name to Klamath Falls. Many thought the word Klamath came from the native word for “people”. The word falls came from the rapids in the Link River.

For over 4,000 years Native Americans have inhabited the Klamath Falls region. Many feel these Native Americans were the first permanent settlers to the area.

When the Applegate Trail opened, the Klamath Basin area became part of the Oregon Trail.

Since 1972 when the citizens voted to adopt the current charter, Klamath Falls is a council-manager form of government.

Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base came to Klamath Falls in 1928. It is now the home of the 173rd Fighter Wing of the Oregon National Guard. Kingsley Field boasts the second longest runway in Oregon and has even been a backup landing strip for the Space Shuttle. The Oregon Air National Guard use Kingsley Field as a training base.

Klamath Falls is home to Klamath Community College; Oregon Institute of Technology and The College of Cosmetology and Oregon State University Extension. There are six high schools in the Klamath County School District, Bonanza Jr/Sr. High School, Chiloquin High School, Gilchrist Junior/Senior High School, Henley High School, Lost River Jr./Sr. High School and Mazama High School. There are two middle schools and thirteen elementary schools. Klamath Falls has outdoor recreation activities for everyone.

The Running Y Ranch features Oregon’s only Arnold Palmer designed 18 hole par 72 golf course. In addition the Running Y has an ice skating arena and trail riding. Shield Crest is the longest golf course in Klamath Falls and Harbor Links located on Klamath Lake has some of the Basin’s most inspiring views.

Klamath Falls is just 50 miles from Crater Lake National Park. Snow shoeing and cross-country skiing are very popular at Crater Lake National Park.

Klamath Falls is home to one of the first designated wilderness areas in the United States. The Mountain Lakes Wilderness is just west of the city. Visitors can enjoy pristine mountain lake fishing and excellent opportunities for backpacking.

Klamath Falls is home to Kiger Stadium built around 1955. Kiger could hold 5,000 baseball fans in its early years. The 2015 Babe Ruth World Series will be held at Kiger Stadium.

The Ross Ragland Theatre is a completely renovated movie theatre that was originally constructed in the 1940s. It is now home of year-round performing art and entertainment venues. The Ross Ragland opened in 1989 and has hosted Grammy Award winners and world renown artists.

Veterans’ Memorial resides in Veterans’ Park in Downtown Klamath Falls. Veterans’ Memorial features bricks for past and present military personnel.
